Bristol: The South West Treasure

Bristol is one of the largest cities in the United Kingdom and is located in the South West of England at the mouth of the river Avon. Contrary to popular belief, Bristol is a county and a city in its own right, a facet that is not shared by any other city within the UK. It is a relatively prosperous city, which has deep traditions in maritime, the arts and culture.

The city has grown from very humble beginnings in the 10th Century to become one of the “best places to live in the UK” according to the Sunday Times. Back when Bristol was being formed, its position in the world meant it was being used as a trade route from the South West of the UK to Ireland. By the 17th century, Bristol become an important city in the colonisation of the New World, i.e. the United States of America. Due to the advantageous geographic location, accessing the Atlantic ocean was simple, which mean trade between the two countries and access to other counties in the region was easier than travelling from London. Today, Bristol is a vibrant city that has grown to be based around the spirit of entrepreneurship. This has been greatly helped by having one of the top Universities in the World as a major focal point for the city - The University of Bristol.

This entrepreneurship has been recognised by the UK government, which has lead to a vast amount of investment in the city. Part of this investment lead to Bristol being allocated the mantle of science city, one of six in the UK, which has attracted some very highly skilled labour to work within a number of scientific initiatives, from computer chip design to aerospace and aeronautical science.

The city also boast having one of the lowest average ages in the UK, which is dropping every year, as more people from around the country look to Bristol for a young, creative crowd that isn’t part of the hustle and bustle of London. This naturally has lead to an influx of new trendy bars, craft ciders and beers, clubs and gastro pubs.

Sport is also a major part of the city, playing host to two football teams, Bristol City and Bristol Rovers. They also have a rugby union team, Bristol Rugby and many other lower league teams in football and rugby. Bristol Rovers did once play in the Premier League, however, recently their form has not reach those loft heights and they find themselves in football league one. Bristol City however are in the Championship and could find themselves promoted if all goes well.

As you can see, there is plenty on offer in Bristol. If you want to learn more about Bristol you have come to the right place.
